About this chmod Calculator
The chmod Calculator builds Unix file permissions visually: tick the read, write and execute boxes for owner, group and others, and read the octal (755, 644) and symbolic (rwxr-xr-x) forms side by side. It also works in reverse when a tutorial just says chmod 750.
How to use the chmod Calculator
- Tick the permission boxes for owner, group and others.
- Read the octal and symbolic values and the ready-made chmod command.
- Or type an octal value to see which boxes it represents.
Good to know
- 644 for files and 755 for directories is the standard web server pairing.
- 777 is almost never the fix; it is usually a path or ownership problem instead.
- The execute bit on a directory means enter and list it, which is different from files.
