About this HTTP Status Codes

HTTP Status Codes is a searchable reference for the full set of HTTP response status codes, from 100 Continue to 511. Look up what a code actually means the next time an API answers with something you have never seen, or when 404 versus 410 matters.

How to use the HTTP Status Codes

  1. Search by code number or by keyword, such as redirect or timeout.
  2. Read the meaning and the typical cause for each match.
  3. Jump back to your client or server code with the answer.

Good to know

  • The 4xx family is the client sending something wrong; 5xx is the server failing to handle a valid request.
  • 301 and 302 are not interchangeable for SEO: permanent versus temporary redirects behave differently.
  • 418 is real, and yes, it is the teapot.
